How to know if counseling is right for you...
We have all heard about therapy and seen the portrayals of therapist and counseling in movies and in shows. But what is counseling and therapy really like? Is it something worth trying?
The answers are Yes!
Therapy if anything, is an opportunity to be heard, a safe place to explore, and a relationship with no judgment. In my bias opinion, I believe everyone deserves this!
Counseling is for all people, whether you think your challenges are big or small, they are still challenges that you are facing and worthy of support. Stress, life transitions, relationships, thoughts, wants, needs, loss… all of these are areas where counselors and therapists can provide individual support, family support, couple support, or any type of support needed.
Counseling is a relationship; a relationship built to be a place of where you can be open, vulnerable, and yourself. A counselor’s role is not to give advice, or provide you with answers, but rather to teach, coach, support, and challenge you. But above all, our role is to be fully present with you and provide unconditional positive regard.
I know there can be anxiety and nervousness that comes up when thinking about the possibility of starting therapy. The fear of the unknown, of being vulnerable, of the uncomfortable. It is an odd job being a therapist. Helping people sit in the uncomfortable feelings. But I hope you find comfort in knowing that your counselor will be there, no matter what challenges, thoughts, feelings, actions, and past you share.
Sooooo, how do you start?
It starts with a call or an email. Whatever is the most comfortable for you.
I hope I have helped ease some of the anxiety surrounding those prominent questions posed at the begging of this article.
Good Luck and I hope you find the support you are seeking!
Until next time,
